12 killed, 8 missing as floods and landslides hit Philippines

MANILA, Aug 10: At least 12 people have been killed and eight others remain missing in the Philippines after floods and landslides triggered by the combined effects of the southwest monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Kujira and Dolphin, authorities said Monday.

Office of Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Laurence Mina said 11 people were also injured, according to The Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The reported causes of death included landslides, rockslides, falling trees, electrocution and drowning.

Nearly 586,000 people across nine regions and 33 provinces have been affected by the severe weather, GMA News Online reported.

Authorities have carried out preemptive evacuations in several areas, with 4,866 people moved to safety in Regions I, III, Calabarzon and Mimaropa.

More than 32,800 people have been displaced and are currently staying in evacuation centers or with relatives as authorities continue relief and emergency operations.
