CAIRO, Oct 20: At least 12 people were killed and 30 others injured on Tuesday when a bus collided with a heavy transport truck on a major highway linking the Egyptian capital to the country’s southern regions, the Health Ministry said.

Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said 28 ambulances were dispatched to the accident site at kilometer 55 of the Cairo-Assiut Western Desert Road.

The 30 injured people were transported to hospital for medical examinations and treatment, he said.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed nearby hospitals to increase their emergency preparedness and provide all necessary medical care to the victims, according to the ministry.

The ministry cautioned that the casualty figures were preliminary and that assessments were continuing.

Egyptian newspaper Sada Al-Balad reported that the collision occurred near the entrance to the regional road leading toward Giza and involved a bus and a heavy transport truck.

Authorities were continuing to respond to the aftermath of the crash and take the necessary legal measures, the report added.

Further details about the circumstances of the collision were not immediately available.
