1,100 domestic abuse cases recorded in Kuwait annually

KUWAIT CITY, March 23: Civil society activists have stressed on the need to establish shelters for women who have been subjected to violence, saying about 1,100 cases of domestic violence recorded in the country annually, in all its psychological, physical and sexual forms, reports Al-Rai daily. The “Raqi” Club for Culture and Media Support held one of the activities of the Arab Media Forum, its fifth dialogue session, and hosted the Secretary-General of the Women’s Social and Cultural Association, Ghada Al- Ghanim.

The club’s president, Ruqaya Al-Sheikh, welcomed the association and praised its role since the sixties in strengthening the role of women, raising their social status and protecting them. She stressed that the role of women is very important for society as a whole, to achieve the principles of sustainable development that start with women’s awareness of themselves and their role in society, and also by making men appreciate them and contribute to their empowerment.

Al-Ghanim talked about the “My Warqati” project, which is divided into four work axes, and began work two years ago, by 4 female lawyers, and conducted a referendum to identify the most common women’s problems, to reach recommendations, and thus issue a law in this regard. Al-Ghanim drew attention to the organization of a full-day workshop, to choose a set of the most important recommendations that were presented to the United Nations on Women’s Day, and among the most important recommendations is the establishment of shelters for women who have been subjected to all kinds of violence.

Attorney Azraa Al-Rifai highlighted the importance of making recommendations to serve the family, establishing special courts for it and combating domestic violence, and working to find shelters for children in the event of disputes or separation between spouses so that children do not enter police stations, considering that local shelters need to be redeveloped.
