NEW DELHI, Oct 6 : Eleven Indian nationals were injured after a Panama-flagged commercial vessel was hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.
The vessel, MT On Peace, had 19 crew members on board, including 17 Indian nationals. According to the ministry, 12 crew members were injured in the incident, 11 of them Indians.
“With the assistance of Omani authorities, the injured crew have since been evacuated and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman,” the ministry said.
India expressed deep concern over continued attacks on shipping in the region and called for an immediate cessation of such incidents.
“The targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and navigation and commerce through international waterways must be restored at the earliest,” the ministry said.
Tensions in the region have remained high since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Iranian retaliation against Israeli targets and US military facilities across the region. The conflict has severely disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
Iran has linked the full reopening of the strait to measures including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets and the implementation of commitments by Washington
