100,000 people in Kuwait suffer from psoriasis

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 13: Head of the Dermatology Department at Jahra Hospital Dr. Muhammad Al-Otaibi announced that the number of patients suffering from psoriasis in Kuwait is about 100,000, reports Al-Rai daily. In a press statement issued during the department’s celebration to mark the World Psoriasis Day, Dr. Al-Otaibi explained that psoriasis is one of the most common diseases in the world. The global incidence rate is one to four percent, and in Arab countries, it is from three to four percent. The disease appears in the form of red spots of different sizes and prominent on the surface of the skin covered with brown scales.

Psoriasis affects any part of the body, especially palms, elbows, knees, scalp, fingernails, and soles of the feet.

The treatment of psoriasis is available in the Ministry of Health in all dermatological departments, such as traditional topical medicines.

If the rate of spread in the body exceeds 30 percent, phototherapy and oral therapy are resorted to. In recent years, specialized companies have provided alternatives in the treatment of psoriasis through biological drugs, such as needles that are used under the skin, and these have proven effective for moderate to severe infection.

The causes of psoriasis include heredity, some stress medications and climate change. It increases in the winter and decreases during the summer season. Tonsillitis in children is called point psoriasis.

The disease is not contagious and the patient can live his normal life. It is preferable not to use creams from unknown sources such as mixes or traditional remedies that are unfortunately marketed. The result will inevitably be counterproductive to the patient.

During his attendance at the celebration, the hospital director Dr. Ghaleb Al-Busais revealed that a lecture on the disease and how to get rid of it through medical consultations and treatment from the specialist doctor was given during the event.

In a press statement, Dr. Al-Busais stressed the need for an awareness role, and highlighted the keenness of the people of Jahra Governorate to actively participate and listen to doctors.
