$1.35B Mega Millions winner files lawsuit against daughter’s mother

WASHINGTON, Nov 18, (Agencies): A Maine man, who secured the $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot in January, has initiated a federal lawsuit against the mother of his daughter. The lawsuit claims that she breached a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) by revealing the jackpot win to his family.

The anonymous winner, who purchased the historic ticket on Jan 13 at Hometown Gas & Grill in Lebanon, opted for a one-time lump-sum payment of $723,564,144 before taxes. According to court documents, the mother of his daughter, identified as Sara Smith, allegedly signed an NDA that obligated her to keep the win confidential until June 2032, coinciding with their daughter’s 18th birthday.

The Maine Lottery Association disclosed the man’s victory on Feb 22, approximately six weeks after the drawing. Despite the revelation, the winner’s identity remained undisclosed, even to lottery officials. The lawsuit alleges that Smith revealed the jackpot win to the man’s father, stepmother, and sister during telephone conversations in September.

The plaintiff, referred to as John Doe in court documents, is now seeking the identities of those who received the unauthorized disclosures. Additionally, he is pursuing compensatory damages, with the amount to be determined at trial but not less than $100,000 per unauthorized disclosure. The lawsuit asserts that John Doe has suffered irreparable harm due to the unauthorized disclosures, and there is an immediate and imminent threat of continued injury without an adequate legal remedy.
