Fishmongers displaying their catch in the fish market

KUWAIT CITY, July 16: Zubaidi (silver pomfret fish) returned to the market after the 45-day fishing ban at a staggering price of KD100 per basket for big ones, KD80 to KD 90 for medium size and KD75 for small.

However, Sharq Fish Market witnessed low turnout, mostly restaurant and hotel owners and some traders. Majority of the buyers were interested in Kuwait’s Zubaidi.

Chairperson of Kuwait Fishermen Union Dhaher Al-Suweiyan affirmed that the fishing season for Zubaidi started after banning it for 45 days in Kuwait’s regional waters. He affirmed close follow up during and after the fishing ban to prepare a report in coordination with relevant bodies in order to determine the feasibility of the ban.

He wondered about the reason behind the ban at a time imported fish keep on entering the country, which necessitates radical solutions such as banning import of Zubaidi from neighboring countries during the ban, because marketing imported Zubaidi would have encouraged some fishermen from neighboring countries to fish despite the ban.
