‘We found them’ … ID, closure on 8 Kuwaiti missing

BAGHDAD, June 23: At the 51st Tripartite Commission (TC) meeting yesterday, held under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), it was announced that the cases of ten missing persons and Prisoners of War (PoW) from the 1990-1991 Gulf War were formally closed. Nine of the ten cases (8 Kuwaitis and 1 Saudi national) were closed based on DNA analyses conducted at the Kuwaiti Department of Forensic Evidence. The other case is an Iraqi soldier, whose remains were found in Bubiyan Island, north of Kuwait, in February 2021. They were repatriated from the State of Kuwait to the Republic of Iraq in March 2021.

The nine mortal remains in question were found at a burial site in Iraq’s Samawa district in March 2019, thanks to the joint efforts of the Iraqi and Kuwaiti authorities assisted by experts from the ICRC within the framework of the Technical Sub- Committee. Since their establishment in 1991 and 1994, the Tripartite Commission and its Technical Sub-Committee, respectively, continue to do their utmost to bring answers to the families of missing persons from 1990-1991 Gulf War. The commission is committed to bring as many answers as possible to families who want their loved ones identified and buried regardless of how much time has already passed.

The burial of a loved one is essential in bringing closure to bereaved families left behind. The Tripartite Commission and its Technical Sub-Committee is chaired by the ICRC, and composed of representatives of the Republic of Iraq, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the Republic of France. The UNAMI joined in 2014, as an observer.
