Why KD 100 not reduced from ‘Bil salaam’ platform?

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 7: Kuwait Union of Domestic Labor Recruitment Offices has expressed its surprise at the decision taken by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to reduce the maximum cost for the recruitment of domestic workers from KD 990 to KD 890, reports Al-Anba daily.

According to informed sources, this decision makes it more difficult to recruit domestic workers at the present time, especially in light of the establishment of recruitment agencies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the labor-exporting countries is charging these agencies with all additional fees related to health requirements in these countries, such as domestic airline tickets for the workers and their expenses during their quarantine period in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

Head of the union Khaled Al- Dakhnan affirmed that these bureaus are between a rock and a hard place, indicating that the owners have become the weakest link in the field of recruitment in light of these economic conditions and strict precautionary measures. Al-Dakhnan said he wondered why KD 100 was not reduced from the “Bil salaam” platform, especially since the costs of the tickets specified on the platform are exaggerated and much higher than those determined by the travel agencies? He indicated that the platform should be the first to reduce the fees in a way that is in the interest of the citizens and the offices at the same time. Al-Dakhnan attributed the reason behind the domestic labor crisis in light of the COVID-19 pandemic to the laziness of some concerned parties in solving the problems of the sector, something that the union has been demanding for years.

He stressed that, in the forefront of the solutions is to conclude agreements and MoUs with a larger number of countries that export domestic workers such as Indonesia and Ethiopia, instead of being satisfied with just two or three countries for the recruitment process.

Al-Dakhnan revealed details about a visit conducted by the union to the embassies of Indonesia and Benin as part of the visits conducted by the union since more than two years ago with the aim of opening new countries in the field of recruitment of domestic labor. He said, “During the visit, the Indonesian side made many requests, foremost of which is their desire to deal in accordance with the system of companies and recruitment offices, and not on the sponsorship system”.

Al-Dakhnan called on the concerned authorities for more cooperation with the union in order to implement radical solutions to the problems faced in the sector even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
