KUWAIT CITY, June 6: Head of the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies Khalid Al-Hudaiban has affirmed that the union is working hard to prevent the recurrence of the onion crisis, reports Al-Rai daily.

This came after the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition banned the import of fruits and vegetables from India due to the Nipah virus. Speaking to the daily, Al-Hudaiban pointed out the union intervened and addressed the previous onion crisis — when the price of one package reached KD13.

He said he has started serious correspondence with Turkey to determine the prices and mechanism for importing Turkish onion, indicating the union has another alternative – to import onion from Egypt and Yemen. He added a study is being conducted to compare prices in Egypt, Turkey and Yemen to ensure that the price of onion in the local market will not increase.
