KUWAIT CITY, July 17: The Ministry of Health has extended the tender for providing health insurance to retired citizens (Afiya), which is being implemented by Gulf Insurance Company for a period of six months starting from July 16 until the awarding of the new tender (Afiya 3), reports Al-Rai daily quoting sources.

Sources affirmed that efforts have been exerted to extend the period to one year as the six-month period increases the insurance risks for the company, especially since it raises the cost of providing health insurance to more than 10 percent of the Kuwaiti society -- more than 137,000 retirees. Sources added the claims owed to the insurance company reached KD125 million and KD25 million of which has been pending since the Afiya 1 contract.
