Manpower keen to enhance women role in private sector

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 26: Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Manpower, Dr. Mubarak Al-Azmi affirmed on Thursday, the authority’s keenness to enhance the role of women in the work system in the private sector, empowering them, providing them with space and facilitating their access to all opportunities because they are one of the pillars of the development plan and of the vision ‘New Kuwait 2035’. Al-Azmi said in a press statement after presiding over the meeting of the Supreme Consultative Committee for Labor Affairs that the work items that focus on seeking to provide economic opportunities for women in Kuwaiti society and their impact on the applicable laws and regulations were discussed.

He explained that the meeting was attended by members of the committee from representatives of several bodies, such as the ministries of Interior, Trade and Industry, Kuwait Municipality, Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the General Union of Kuwait Workers. He stated that the meeting comes after the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah addressed the Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr. Abdullah Al-Salman to refer proposals related to indicators of activities women, business and law in the work environment, which were presented to the committee.

Proposals
He stated that all the proposals referred to within the committee’s work items were also discussed, which would enhance the role of women in the private sector and empower them, and what this required for the development of legislative mechanisms to strengthen the Kuwait index, indicating that the principle of prohibiting discrimination in employment on the basis of sex, parental leave and others were among the topics that were discussed during the committee meeting. In other news, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy revealed the percentage of Kuwaitis working at the six power and desalination water station has reached 93.3 percent of the total workforce — 5,640 employees out of the total of 6,040 employees in the sector, noting that the number of non-Kuwaiti workers in the sector is estimated at 400. Reliable sources told the Al-Seyassah daily that the biggest percentage of employees is concentrated in Al-Zour South Plant with 1,503 employees, followed by West Doha Station with 1,367, then Al-Shuaiba Station with 1,033 employees, while the number of employees at the Al-Subbiya Station is 927, at Doha East Station 849 and in at the Shuwaikh Power Plant it is 361 employees.

The sources added that the total number of employees in the ministry during July was 25,689, including 24,698 Kuwaitis and 991 non-Kuwaitis. The sources affirmed the ministry’s keenness to hire national labor in all sectors, especially technical sectors such as the power stations sector, which is one of the pillars of work within the ministry. In a separate context, the sources indicated that the Central Agency for Public Tenders recently requested the ministry for a subsequent letter that includes the financial appropriation and the amendments that were discussed to approve the ministry’s request to submit a project to supply, install, operate and maintain the Doha seawater desalination plant by reverse osmosis with equipment to increase the alkalinity of water produced in the second phase.

The sources indicated that the ministry is counting on this vital project as one of the water projects implemented by the ministry to provide the groundwater needed for the final treatment of distilled water, as the water generated from the reverse osmosis desalination project to be established at the Doha station is drinkable without the need to mix it with groundwater. The sources also pointed out that the project contributes to enhancing and supporting the production capacity of water, to secure the population’s need for fresh water as well as the needs of the industrial sector, in addition to ensuring the continuity of providing future quantities of water required to be supplied for industrial expansions and new cities. The sources added that the project achieves a balance between the production of electric power and water production from the West and East Doha stations, especially in winter when the demand for electric power decreases, while the demand for water remains the same, which increases the efficiency of the two stations, and thus reduces energy consumption.
