KUWAIT CITY, March 4: Kuwait Urological Association Chairperson, Andrology and Urinary Tract Diseases Consultant and lecturer at the College of Medicine in Kuwait University Professor Adel Al-Hunayan has confirmed the increasing number of erectile dysfunction (ED) cases in the country. Speaking on the sideline of the annual conference on men’s health held recently at Sabah Al-Ahmad Urology Center, Al-Hunayan explained ED is also known as impotence which affects 75 percent of men above 60 years old, 30 percent of those above 40 years old, and 20 percent of those below 40 years old.

The conference tackled the latest medical developments in men’s health, including ED and infertility. Al-Hunayan pointed out ED is related to chronic diseases like diabetes and heart problems, indicating that smoking is considered the most common cause. He said 85 percent of diabetes patients are suffering from sexual dysfunction according to the latest research conducted in the country; hence, he emphasized the need for doctors to ask diabetes patients about their sex life.

He added five surgical operations and several diagnoses were carried out during the two-day conference. The conference was aimed at explaining and presenting medical developments in diseases common among men such as impotence and infertility, their causes and symptoms; as well as raising public awareness on these diseases and correcting misconceptions. The conference also presented alternative devices that are considered excellent and practical solutions to acute ED conditions.

These medical devices, which include penile implant (or penile prosthesis), can improve marital sexual life, are self-contained and designed to look and perform natural erection, while implantation takes a day of surgical operation depending on the quality of medical service offered to patients. Participants in the conference were consultants with vast experience in the field and some of them came from Europe.
