Kuwait, US discuss bolstering ties

KUWAIT CITY, July 29, (Agencies): His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received Thursday visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the delegation accompanying him. The reception took place with the precence of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, as Blinken conveyed to His Highness the Amir greetings and appreciation of US President Joe Biden, as well as best wishes of progress and prosperity for the Kuwaiti people. In turn, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf expressed utmost appreciation for the US President and the friendly American people, as both countries are celebrating 60 years of historic ties, as well as 30 years of Kuwait’s liberation.

During the reception, also attended by Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, bilateral ties and means to develop them on all levels, in addition to issues of mutual concern and latest regional developments, were discussed. Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah and Antony Blinken held talks Thursday at the Ministry’s Headquarters. Both sides discussed enhancing the bilateral, exceptional and strategic relations and stressed the deep and distinguished ties of the two friendly countries and their peoples. They also discussed the latest developments on the regional and international scenes, as well as reviewing issues of mutual concerns.

Sheikh Dr. Al-Sabah and Blinken shared their views to boost cooperation in facing the coronavirus pandemic, developing health and education sectors, food security, and cybersecurity defense and artificial intelligence They both agreed on holding the fifth round of the strategic dialogue between the State of Kuwait and the United States during the last quarter of the current year. During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the fruitful and successful bilateral cooperation between the two countries, and the common views on many important regional and international files. On his part, the US Secretary of State looked forward to keep the progressive collaborating layout between Kuwait and the US in all field at all levels. He praised the bilateral relations connecting the two brotherly countries and the Kuwaiti efforts in consolidating and maintaining international peace and security in the region, stressing at the same time, the US commitments to maintain the security, safety and stability of Kuwait. Blinken said that Kuwait had shown great leadership in resolving regional crises. The American official, in a joint press conference, pointed out that the US feels proud of its friendship with Kuwait, and its determination to strengthen the relationship on all levels. He praised Kuwait’s efforts in backing peace and international security in the region, pointing out that Kuwait is a vital partner in ending the war in Yemen. “We have appointed a special envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, to lead our diplomatic affairs to end the war, and he is working hard. It is up to the Houthis to show good intentions to end this war,” he added. On the same matter, he expressed appreciation to Saudi Arabia’s efforts in reaching that goal, and showed commitment to supporting Saudi’s security.

Attempts
When asked about the Iranian nuclear file, he responded, “the US made several indirect attempts for peace talks, but the Iranians refused to communicate directly, we have showed our European allies, Russia and China that we have the intention to return to the nuclear file.” “The ball is in Iran’s court now, and it has to show good faith, as we are committed to reaching a diplomatic solution, but this cannot continue indefinitely if Iran keeps violating international laws,” he added. Sheikh Dr. Al-Sabah affirmed that Kuwait and United States share common vision with regard to regional and international issues. Sheikh Dr. Al-Sabah in a joint press conference with the visiting US Secretary of State said “We were honored this morning by meeting His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The United States is negotiating with Kuwait and other countries whether they can host Afghans who supported the American war effort and could face Taliban revenge attacks if they stay in Afghanistan, America’s top diplomat said Thursday. Secretary of State Blinken did not announce any deal or disclose critical details about the process, such as who would be eligible for relocation or where they would be housed.
