KUWAIT, Feb 20, (KUNA): Kuwait Special Olympics team will participate in the 15th World Special Olympics Games 2019 (Mental Disabilities), hosted by the United Arab Emirates in March with the participation of 7,500 athletes from 192 countries.

Kuwaiti Special Olympics team Director Rehab Buresly said at a press conference Tuesday the team consists of 76 players and coaches of both genders, ready for the tournament and looking forward to achieve gold medals.

There are several activities and programs for the Special Olympics, including competitive sports, training competitions, social initiatives, health programs and a conference to prepare young leaders with disabilities, she added.

Buresly noted that Kuwait will participate in eight games, basketball, handball, football, volleyball, bowling, athletics, weightlifting and table tennis.

The Special Olympics aims to integrate people with mental disabilities into society and develop their athletic skills, Buresly said.

For her part, Deputy Director of Kuwaiti Special Olympics team, Huda Al-Khaldi, pointed out that the delegation will depart on March 8 to the emirate of Sharjah, the host city of the Special Olympics.

Al-Khaldi noted the players and delegations will be visiting the landmarks in Sharjah.

Kuwait Special Olympics Chairman Hayat Mostafa said that the idea of the Special Olympics was made after observing that sports activities contribute happiness to people with mental disabilities and help in rehabilitating them intellectually and physically.

The Special Olympics is a global sports movement that creates a new world of integration with the community for people with disabilities regardless of their ability or disability.
