Critics, writers, playwrights and fans praise Kuwaiti director Al-Bassam

Director and actor Suleiman Al-Bassam with his theatrical group during the performance of the play i-Media

CASABLANCA, Jan 17: A performance of the play ‘i-Media’ by Kuwaiti director Suleiman Al-Bassam at the Mohammed VI Theater lit up the nights of the Arab Theater Festival in its 13th session in Casablanca, with the presence of playwrights from various Arab countries, as well as a large crowd of fans. A number of critics, writers, playwrights, and the public who followed the show Saturday evening, agreed in statements to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the show was different from what theater stages in Arab countries are accustomed to in terms of theme, performance, and boldness in the presentation, handling and vision, praising the creative spirit of the director and actor Suleiman Al-Bassam, who presented through his play, a new experience in Arab theatrical action.

Statement
Moroccan theater researcher Abdelmajid Ahri said, in a statement to KUNA, “We are about to embark on a new experiment in which all the elements of the theatrical structure are available, in addition to its theme, which the director was inspired by from the Greek myth and gave a refined artistic and creative touch. He described the show as “very interesting and beautiful, with performance, dialogue and music by a team of actors from various Arab and international theatrical experiences,” stressing that this in turn added aesthetics and fun to the show.

For his part, the Emirati playwright and actor Abdullah Masoud said in a similar statement that the show presented a different vision far from stereotypes, pointing out that it was highly praised by the critics and playwrights who attended the show, as well as the interaction of the audience, especially since the show won many awards during its presentation in international and Arab festivals. In turn Moroccan theater professor and director Anwar Hassani said that ‘i-Media’ by its Kuwaiti director, Suleiman Al-Bassam, is tantamount to digging up and drowning in the history of the well-known legend taking revenge on her lover who abandoned her, noting that “the show was presented professionally, especially at the level of simple and deep scenography, dress, lighting and sound effects and movements. He added, “As for the level of diagnosis, it can be studied in institutes, as it was distinguished by good diction in multiple languages, expressive gestures, and calculated movements accompanied by live musical effects,” ending his statement by saying that it is “high quality theatrical pleasure.”

As for the head of the teaching staff at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait, Khalifa Al-Hajri, he said that the play bears modernist visions, and that its writer, director, and actor Suleiman Al-Bassam “made a long-term leap in the field of Arab theater,” especially through this play, expressing his pride in Al-Bassam’s affiliation with the Kuwaiti theatrical movement. Kuwaiti critic and journalist Abdul Sattar Naji confirmed that the show “represents an advanced stage in the Gulf and Arab theater in general, befitting the history of the theatrical movement in Kuwait, on the Arab and international levels, through a real creator who tried to jump over many taboos and “explore new horizons in the space of Arab and international theater.” (KUNA)
