KUWAIT CITY, Jan 17: In its first attempt, Kuwait conducted a successful surgery to completely remove a tumor in the brain of a 15-year-old girl who was suffering from a tumor called Schwannoma, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The surgery took place in Ibn Sina Hospital, and was conducted by Dr. Muhammad Al-Manabri, Dr. Abdullah Al-Shawish and Dr. Darajan Safik, and the anesthesiologist was Dr. Khaled Salah.

This tumor grows in the sheaths of nerves in the peripheral nervous system, or the parts of the nervous system that are not in the brain or spinal cord.

The girl had started to suffer from severe deterioration in the sense of hearing, and an increase in the size of the tumor, which put pressure on the sensitive parts of the brain. Since the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the visitation of doctors from abroad, a decision was taken to remove the tumor with the approval of the Head of the Neurosurgery Department in Ibn Sina Hospital Dr. Tariq Al-Sheikh, the Head of the unit Dr. Yousef Al-Awadhi, and the Director of the hospital Dr. Abbas Ramadan.

The surgery took approximately ten hours to completely remove the 3.5-centimeter tumor. No complications were reported, and the girl was discharged after her condition was stabilized. She is currently receiving continuous follow-up.
