KUWAIT CITY, Aug 28: Expatriates in all likelihood will pay water tariff after implementation of the new electricity and fuel prices due to recent decision of the Ministry of Electricity and Water to install water meter for each flat, reports Al-Rai daily.

Currently, each investment building has a single meter for water, regardless of the number of flats in the building, while the building owner bears the cost of water, the daily noted.

In this context, informed sources from the Ministry of Electricity and Water disclosed that the ministry will float tender to install 100,000 water meters at investment and commercial buildings concurrently with tender for the installation of electricity meters— as part of policy to rationalize the consumption of water and electricity and relieve the building owners of high cost of water and electricity.

The same source noted the ministry has concluded five modes of study concerning the locations for installing water meters in already-existing buildings, noting the ministry will ask the owners of under-construction buildings to present water meter plan just like electricity plan for approval. He reiterated the Ministry of Water and Electricity has formed a committee to travel to some Gulf countries, including Qatar, to learn from their experience in this field.
