KUWAIT CITY, Dec 27: The Workers Union of the Kuwait University has called on the Minister of Oil, Minister of Higher Education, and the President of Kuwait University Dr. Muhammad Al-Faris to stand with the university’s employees regarding the payment of the bonuses due to them for their work during the summer semester, without any prejudice towards their entitlements, reports Al-Anba daily.

The union urged the minister to ensure the university administration are told not to show discrimination in the future between administrators and academics, and it deplores the university administration for its refusal to pay the summer semester bonuses for the 2020/2021 academic year to employees and assistant secretaries at the university, despite the fact that they were paid to the Secretary-General of the university, the academic body, the academic support body and university administration, in contrast to the past years.

In a letter addressed to the minister, the union stressed the need to look into the disbursement of employee bonuses for the aforementioned summer semester, considering that it is the inherent right of employees, who were on top of their work in the summer semester. It explained that all previous departments would have agreed to pay the employees for their work in the summer semester, but the current administration has refrained from the matter, even though it is an expensive administration and it is a fortiori to abide by the rules and regulations in force at Kuwait University.

The university administration has been dealing arbitrarily with the employees in the matter of disbursing the rewards for the summer semester. This cannot be accepted, especially since the employees were deprived of their periodic vacations as they were staying on top of their work in the summer semester. Also, the decision to refrain from disbursing the bonuses was taken after the work of the summer semester ended.

It is not permissible to withhold rewards after the summer semester ends, as the university administration, especially the Deanship of Admission and Registration, was not clear from the beginning, based on the summer studies list. Article 7 – Other Categories – of the regulations stipulates that a committee of the Secretary-General of the University, the Dean of Admission and Registration, the Dean of the College or the competent work center official shall consider and decide before the start of the summer semester the proposal of the college or the work center by adding the titles of the jobs that participate in teaching during summer semester.
