MoE heeds opinion of experts to discontinue Tablet project

KUWAIT CITY, March 20: Political activist Rakan Bin Hathlien praised the decision taken by Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Hamid Al-Azmi to refer hundreds of suspected fake certificates to the Public Prosecution, describing the decision as bold, reports Al-Nahar daily.

In a press statement, Bin Hathlien said Kuwaiti citizens are looking forward to hearing such decisions that can pull out corruption from the roots. He stressed that corruption in educational institutions reflect negatively on the level of educational output.

Bin Hathlien urged Dr Al-Azmi to go ahead with his bold steps and not pay any attention to the campaign that is expected to be launched against him soon. He called on all ministers to step in the shoes of Dr Al-Azmi and start confronting the widespread corruption in their ministries.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Education has heeded the opinion of experts in the field of education by deciding to discontinue the ‘Tablet’ project after wasting more than KD 26.3 million and refusing to extend the contract, which will expire by the end of the current academic year, after three years of implementation, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In an official letter, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education Dr Haitham Al-Atari assigned the Assistant Undersecretary for Education Facilities and Planning, and Chairman of Information Technology and National Strategy Implementation Committee Dr Khalid Al-Rushaed to take necessary steps for non-extension of contracts No. 136-197/2015 under tender No. 26/ 2009-2010.

The contracts were aimed at procuring and maintaining laptops for students and teachers of secondary level. According to a source, such a decision is deemed as bold and strong, and it will serve as a way of correcting the wrong educational trend that previous officials failed to do. He indicated that the decision was taken after painstaking reviews and consultations with experts.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Education has asked Kuwait Municipality to review the sites allocated for schools in new residential areas to fulfill the requirements of the new designs and abide by the rule on minimum space in each phase, reports Al-Rai daily. Acting Director General of the Municipality Ahmad Al-Subaih has confirmed approval of the ministry’s request, including the redistribution of services and utilities in three new areas — Messilah, Funaitees and Abu Fatira — to meet the requirements of the ministry.
