KUWAIT CITY, Feb 12: The Amiri Pardon Committee has finalized the selection of beneficiaries of this year’s amnesty – around 350 prisoners, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources from the security sector. Sources disclosed that 100 prisoners, including citizens, Bedouns and expatriates, will be released immediately; while the remaining 250 include those whose sentence will be commuted and those whose fines will be cancelled.

Sources affirmed the list of beneficiaries will be submitted to the Public Prosecution for approval by the Attorney General, and then to the Amiri Diwan for review and approval. The decree regarding those who will be pardoned will be issued on Feb 25, sources said. Sources added the expatriate prisoners, who will be released will be handed over to the Deportation Department for deportation to their countries; while the citizens and Bedouns will be banned from traveling during the remainder of their prison sentence and will be subject to monitoring.

Meanwhile, according to informed sources, the second batch of Kuwaiti citizens covered by the Amiri pardon will soon be submitted to the political leadership, after the committee of the three heads of authorities finished working on the necessary controls and conditions, says Al-Seyassah.

They revealed that the names do not include the convicts in the case popularly known as the “Fintas Group”, who were excluded due to what was described as “strong pressure” despite previous recommendations to include them.

The sources indicated that those convicted in the “Lions of the Peninsula” case, and those convicted of belonging to the Al- Nusra Front, as well as Fouad Al-Rifai, Alaa Hussein, the last defendant in the Abdali Cell case, as well as a number of overseas bloggers will be included in this batch. Amid expectations of a controversy over the inclusion of some names, the sources revealed that the names of those covered by the pardon would be released before the end of February.

The sources hinted at the possibility that the release would coincide with the issuance of a number of “populist” decisions and laws to celebrate the National Holidays, most notably the participation of retirees in the profits of the Public Institution for Social Security, and allowing workers in the government sector to exchange cash for the balance of their vacations.

A few days ago, MP Dr. Muhammad Al-Huwailah posted a Twitter message in which he thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad, and the Amnesty (Pardon) Committee. He wrote, “Dear brothers, Sheikh ShafiSultan, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Ajmi and Sheikh Masoud Al-Hajri … See you among us very soon.”
