TAMPA, Jun 9: The United States is investigating whether Iranian forces were responsible for downing a US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
The helicopter went down near the coast of Oman on Monday evening under circumstances that remain unclear. Officials are examining whether the aircraft was brought down by hostile fire or suffered a mechanical or operational failure.
The Apache’s two crew members were successfully rescued after a US unmanned surface vessel located them in the water and transported them to shore. The military described the operation as a first-of-its-kind maritime rescue involving an unmanned vessel.
Earlier, US Central Command said the crew members were recovered within approximately two hours of the incident and were in stable condition.
The reported investigation comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region and follows a series of military confrontations involving the United States, Iran and their regional allies. US authorities have not yet released findings on the cause of the crash.
