US Apache Goes Down Near Hormuz; Trump Says Pilots Fine

WASHINGTON, Jun 9: A US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, with both crew members safely rescued, according to a report by The New York Times, citing two people briefed on the incident.

The cause of the crash remains unclear. One source said possibilities include Iranian fire, a mechanical failure, or another operational issue. The incident occurred amid heightened regional tensions following recent exchanges of strikes between Israel and Iran.

The Trump administration had not publicly disclosed the incident at the time the report was published. The AH-64 Apache, armed with Hellfire missiles, is among the most heavily armed aircraft operating in the Gulf region and is routinely used to patrol the strategic waterway and counter drone or small-boat threats.

Speaking on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the pilots were safe and said Washington would release a report on the incident.

“The pilots are fine. We are going to issue a report tomorrow,” Trump told reporters while traveling to the White House.

Trump also said he had a “very good conversation” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, defending Israel’s response to Iranian attacks and claiming both sides had agreed to halt further escalation through US mediation.

He added that Washington was close to reaching an agreement with Iran, arguing that diplomacy would be more effective than additional military action, which he warned could disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and result in significant casualties.
