Scarecrow

IN the Egyptian dialect, the ‘khayal el hakl’ (scarecrow) is a primitive statue placed in gardens and farms to frighten the birds that think the statue is a human; so they do not go near or around such places.

Recently, I did not find a name worthy of our rational government better than this one, especially since we will soon celebrate a series of occasions – National Day, Liberation Day and Al-Isra Al-Miraj. However, our rational government goes into a death fantasy as it does not see, does not hear and does not speak.

As far as we remember, our main streets and countless government buildings are empty for the first time. If we look at an area like South Surra, we see huge government buildings that compete with the size of government buildings in Washington, London, Paris and Moscow; yet it does not have a flag or decorative lights that remind us of the upcoming Kuwaiti holidays.

We thank God for those who decorated our residential areas with the lights of the Kuwaiti flag.  Our cooperative societies made the flags flutter on poles of lights in our residential areas. The money used for these decorations came from our personal funds, not from public funds.  Huge companies and banks have also decorated their buildings; while rationalists have deprived us of public funds for years through corruption, gifts and grants without any accounting or bookkeeping.

This made us feel that we are living on a stage of national and religious holidays, which our government agencies do not feel! Apologies!!

Astronomer Salih Al-Ujairi passed away – one of the few Kuwaiti flags whose name is mentioned almost daily by every Kuwaiti from cradle to grave; because his name is associated with the calendar that we use to remember important dates such as the opening of our schools, appointments with doctors, travels, prayers, fasting and Iftar.

It is enough that he worked in teaching the princes and leaders of this country like His Highness the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad, his brothers and cousins … Once when he was young, Sheikh Sabah engaged in mischievous conduct and Al-Ujairi beat him only to discover later that he was the son of HH the Amir of the country at the time!

We lived with this distinguished figure in the Diwan of the late Barjas Hammoud Al-Barjas in South Shuwaikh.  Therefore, we appeal to the the imagination of the dead; that is, our government which is just watching, to name a scientific center or a main street after such a brilliant personality.  For decades, our rationalists kept on calling for naming scientific centers and main streets after people we did not hear about until they passed away.

It is enough for Al-Rashida to ignore shining figures; such as Sheikh Yusuf bin Issa Al-Qena’I – the founder of education and Sharia judiciary in Kuwait who was honored by naming only one school after him.

It is enough for them to ignore a high-ranking figure, such as his late son and our great law professor Hamad bin Youssef Al-Issa. He founded and headed the Personnel Bureau, as well as determined who deserved the Kuwaiti citizenship.
