KUWAIT CITY, March 7: The Ministry of Education is considering stopping education in the kindergarten and primary stages for an unidentified period if the schools remain closed for more than a month, reports Al-Anba daily.

According to educational sources the ministry is closely following the developments of the coronavirus, noting that “we, like other countries, must be cautious and take precautions. Therefore, there is a strong possibility of closing kindergarten and school at primary level if the extension of schools closure goes beyond one month.”

Sources added that with the onset of summer and the hot weather, it is difficult to compel students to go to schools, noting that the results of the first semester will be taken and approved for the second semester.

The sources explained that for the intermediate and secondary levels, the curriculum will be reduced especially for nonessential subjects such as music, physical training and art education to pay more attention for other subjects to compensate for loss of time.

In this regard, the Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Development and Activities at the Ministry of Education, Faisal Al-Maqasid, has announced the suspension of activities, events, lectures, and seminars in all public and private schools.

Al-Maqasid said in a circular said, “Because of the belief of the Ministry of Education in the importance of prevention, and taking precautionary measures and taking into account the public health of our students and to preserve their safety.”

‘Delay resumption of classes to protect students’
Member of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) Abdullah Al-Suba’ie affirmed the need to delay resumption of classes to protect public health and ensure that no one among the students is infected with coronavirus, reports Al-Anba daily.

Al-Suba’ie pointed out the cost of delaying the resumption of classes will be far lower than exposing the students to danger. He said the spread of the virus among a few students will be so disastrous for Kuwait to bear and it will cause serious fear among people. He reminded that prevention is better than cure.

Meanwhile, Al-Rai daily has reported that there is no official ministerial decision preventing teachers and supervisors suspected to be infected with coronavirus from reporting for work until they are certified virus-free or upon completion of quarantine period. A source explained preventive measures were done through individual efforts in different educational districts.

He disclosed that a female official in an educational district tried to create a special room for a supervisor who just returned from Iran but was later advised not to report for work until certified fit for it.

He said another official reprimanded the woman for the initiative, asking what right she had to prevent a Kuwaiti from resuming work. He urged the ministry to issue a unified decision in order to avoid confl ict in official procedures
