KUWAIT CITY, Sept 8: The Detention Extension Judge has, for the second time, extended the detention of the former financial attaché in Kuwait’s health office in Washington for 10 more days. The official has been accused of stealing public funds and embezzling the funds of the health office.

The accused was previously referred to the Central Jail for detention for 21 days to complete investigations on the squandering public funds charge.

This came after Health Minister Dr Ali Al-Obaidi referred the accused and other employees to the Public Prosecution when their contracts in the Washington-based health office were terminated.

The prosecution also ordered the Ministry of Finance, Kuwait Stock Exchange and Central Bank of Kuwait to freeze the defendant’s assets which are deposited or traded in banks and investment funds.

It has been reported the US authorities arrested the former financial attaché who was assigned at the Kuwait Health Office in Washington on charges of money laundering and illegal revenues. The arrest happened when the attaché tried to travel back to Kuwait.
