KUWAIT CITY, March 28: The Court of Appeals has rejected the lower court’s verdict, which sentenced a foreign businessman to five years imprisonment with hard labor, and instead acquitted the businessman from all charges leveled against him.

The case files indicated the Public Prosecution had accused the businessman of stealing company money with the help of an official the businessman is alleged to have bribed. The Prosecution explained that the businessman bribed his way to have an overpriced purchase order of office equipment for the company, which caused the company to incur KD 25 thousand losses.

Representing the businessman Attorney Muhammad Taleb, faulted the verdict issued by the court saying the charges are not criminal charges but misdemeanors, while the expert failed to look into six out of seven purchase orders made by the company after the expiry date of the discount offer, which was mentioned on the price quotation note. Attorney Taleb pointed out that the prosecution failed to produce any substantial evidence of the relation between the accused and the official from the company, while it took the company 10 months before filing the case.

MoH to pay social allowance: The Appeals Court presided over by Judge Adel Al-Kandari obliged the Health Ministry to pay a Kuwaiti lady employee who is married to a non-Kuwaiti social allowance worth KD 50 monthly for each of her two sons retroactively from the date the husband refrained from shouldering the expenses of his children.

Attorney Noha Al-Rayes said her client deserves social allowance as per Civil Service Commission Law 1979, citing item No. 3 which sets the rules for granting social allowance, especially as the husband of the woman is none Kuwaiti and irresponsible for the upkeep of his children. Accordingly, the Health Ministry which employs the plaintiff has to pay social allowance for her client retroactively from the date the husband stopped catering for the children.

Escapees being probed: The security authorities have completed interrogations with the two Iranians who had escaped from the Al-Zahra Police Station but were rearrested a few hours later, reports Al-Anba daily. The suspects explained in detail how they managed to escape by saying one of them who is a blacksmith found a defect in the window of the cell and was able to remove it without making any sound. They denied receiving help from any source – either securitymen or civilians.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Interior Lieutenant-General Suleiman Al-Fahd honored in his office two police officers and a sergeant major who arrested the Iranians and the citizen who informed the Operations Room of the Interior Ministry.
