TEHRAN, Jun 9: A senior Iranian judicial official said Tuesday that confiscating assets belonging to Iranians living abroad is intended to weaken anti-government demonstrations outside the Islamic Republic's embassies and consulates overseas.
According to judiciary-linked Mizan News, Isfahan judiciary chief Asadollah Jafari said expatriates would be discouraged from participating in protests if homes, businesses, or other properties they own in Iran are seized. He described the measure as a judicial tool to counter what he called an “economic and media war” waged by Iran’s opponents.
Iranian authorities have recently ordered the seizure of assets belonging to dozens of individuals, many of whom reside abroad, over allegations of cooperation with Israel and activities deemed harmful to national security.
Jafari said the confiscations are intended to create a “deterrent effect,” arguing that such actions would make anti-Iran demonstrations outside embassies in Europe, North America and other regions “weaker and more hopeless.”
Iranian expatriate communities have staged regular protests outside Iranian diplomatic missions in recent months, voicing support for protesters inside the country and criticizing the government's crackdown on dissent.
