WASHINGTON, Nov 14, (Agencies): A young boy found himself hospitalized after his mother, mistaking him for an intruder, accidentally shot him in the leg, as reported by the Pembroke Pines Police Department in Florida.

The incident unfolded around 1:43 am on a Sunday when the police responded to a shooting call at a residence near Northwest 134 Avenue and Northwest 9th Street, according to an official statement.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered the mother and son inside the home. The police statement revealed that the mother had fallen asleep on the living room couch, while her son had retired to his upstairs room earlier in the evening. The two were the sole occupants of the residence.

The mother was awakened by a noise in the kitchen, assuming it to be an intruder. In response, she retrieved a concealed firearm from her purse, which was nearby in the living room, according to the police statement. Upon investigating the source of the noise, the mother and her son coincidentally encountered each other in the kitchen, resulting in mutual surprise.

Regrettably, in the midst of the confusion, the mother accidentally discharged her firearm twice – once hitting the floor and unintentionally injuring her son in the leg, as explained by the police.

Following the incident, the injured boy was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. While the police are conducting an investigation, they have indicated that there appears to be no criminal intent associated with the case at this time. Additionally, the Department of Children and Family has been notified for its involvement in the ongoing investigation.
