KUWAIT CITY, May 16: The Ethiopian delegation which arrived in the country has begun discussion with the government agencies to complete the modalities of signing the memorandum of understanding on the recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa, reports Al-Jarida daily. The specialist in domestic labor affairs, Bassam Al- Shammari, told the daily the frequent news about setting the monthly salaries of Ethiopian workers at less than their Asian counterparts is a grave mistake that threatens their continuation in the homes of their sponsors, especially if there is a worker of another nationality in the same house who receives a higher monthly salary.

Al-Shammari stressed on the need to change that policy which is vastly prevalent in determining the monthly salaries of domestic workers according to nationality, which is reflected in the recruitment process in general, and reduces the numbers and opportunities for them to come to Kuwait, stressing that equality in salaries among workers who perform the same work is one of the most important reasons if Kuwait has to streamline employment in this sector so that ‘some’ do not feel neglected or discriminated against.
