KUWAIT CITY, Sept 27: The Misdemeanor Court has set Oct 11 for hearing on the “Abdali Cell” case filed by the State Security Department against the first 22 suspects of the total 26 suspects accused of participating in training sessions on the use of weapons and explosives in Lebanon.

The Court of Appeals returned the case to the Misdemeanor Court citing lack of jurisdiction to entertain the issue. On Sept 1, 2015, the Public Prosecution Department charged the suspects for allegedly conducting training activities that could jeopardize the national unity and peace in Kuwait.

They were also accused of conspiring with Iran and Hezbollah on espionage activities to attack Kuwait by smuggling into the country some explosives and ammunitions meant for criminal activities.

The court has already upheld the verdict of the Court of First Instance that sentenced the first suspect to death, and handed life imprisonment on the sixth suspect and acquitted 10 others. It commuted the sentences of five suspects and fined four others instead of prison terms, and refused to entertain an appeal in the death sentence passed on the 23rd suspect in absentia until expiration of the ultimatum for appeal or judgment is delivered by the Court of Appeals.

Ruling Wednesday: The Criminal Court will rule Wednesday on the State Security case against Islamic Alliance Secretary General Sheikh Husain Al-Maatouq who has been accused of violating the National Unity Law, spreading false news and disturbing public order. Al-Maatouq denied all the charges when he appeared before the Public Prosecution and the court.

The prosecution charged him with inciting trouble because of his statement during Jumaa Prayer and offending the judiciary and public prosecutors. He was released on bail of KD 10,000 after the interrogation. The State Security Department fi led a complaint at the Public Prosecution against Al-Maatouq due to his Friday sermon in Imam Husain Mosque in Maidan Hawaly as he talked about Al-Abdally Cell case. The prosecution issued a warrant to search and arrest Al-Maatouq in response to the complaint of the department.
