KUWAIT CITY, Feb 14: The campaign by Ministry of Commerce and Industry targeting outlets that sell cigarettes is still ongoing. A number of citations have been issued against some grocery stores in various parts of the country, reports Al-Rai daily.

According to sources, citations were not issued against any cooperative societies, as the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies had issued an official circular obligating all cooperative societies to commit to the regular prices. They revealed that the union has the right to ask Ministry of Commerce and Industry to dissolve the boards of violating cooperative societies. It has been noticed that some grocery stores and cooperative societies have temporarily stopped selling cigarettes in order to avoid being subjected to legal actions.

Meanwhile, sources from Ministry of Commerce and Industry explained that the ministry has launched an extensive campaign targeting stores of cigarettes companies in order to find out if they have sufficient stock or suffer from shortage in stock which forced them to increase the prices. Initial indications show the current stock is priced the same as what it was prior to the increase in prices
