Almost 2 million get vaccinated

KUWAIT CITY, May 22: Kuwait is a few steps away from reaching the milestone goal of vaccinating two million citizens and expatriates against coronavirus, reports Al-Qabas daily. Health officials informed the daily that the total number of vaccinated people has so far reached 1,922,000; pointing out the vaccination pace accelerated recently due to the arrival of Pfizer vaccine shipments almost weekly. The Ministry of Health has intensified its efforts to vaccinate about 70 percent of the target population in a bid to achieve herd immunity soon in order to contain the epidemic and halt its spread among various segments of society.

Health officials confirmed the vaccination campaign has started to show results as refl ected in the improvement of the epidemiological situation in the country, particularly the recent decrease in the number of deaths, new corona cases and coronavirus patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). On the possibility of importing other vaccines besides Pfizer and Oxford, the officials confirmed that the procurement of Moderna vaccine is in the final stage of approval, stressing that the ministry will not approve vaccines whose effectiveness and safety have not been verified by published scientific studies. They were referring to issues in some countries which decided to administer the third dose of some vaccines, which were not approved in Kuwait, at least six months after the second dose.
