15 pct of Kuwait’s population diabetics – Call to change lifestyle, engage in sports

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 11: Assistant Undersecretary for Private Medical Services Dr Muhammad Al-Khashti has warned that approximately 15 percent of Kuwait’s population suffers from diabetes, among them 5 percent are yet to be diagnosed and unaware of their status.

In a speech at the launch of new record book for diabetes patients, Dr Al-Khashti mentioned that results of the latest health survey on risk factors of the non-contagious chronic diseases conducted by the ministry indicated 15.8 percent of men and 13.4 percent of women between 18-70 years, constituting 15 percent of the population suffer from diabetes.

He affirmed the importance of physical activities in reducing the rate of diabetes and obesity, noting many people don’t go to the doctor whenever they have symptoms similar to those of diabetes. This prompted awareness to realize the risks of the disease, thus the ministry came with the new record book.

He stressed the ministry keeps statistics of diabetes patients it receives through the activities of internal medicine units in the public hospitals, in addition to researches and studies conducted by Dasman Diabetes Institute. Al-Khashti said the importance of convincing citizens and residence to change their lifestyle and practice sports to reduce the risks of contracting the disease.
