US approves $40m sale of bombs to Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 4, (Agencies): The US State Department approved the sale to Kuwait of 2,622 bombs for its F/A-18 aircraft at an estimated cost of $40.4 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a release. The government of Kuwait requested to buy 1,020 Mk-82 500 lb. bombs, 1,002 Mk-83 1000 lb. bombs and 600 Mk-84 2000 lb. bombs, the Thursday, Aug 2 release said.

Also included in the proposed sale are general purpose bomb components and fuzes, test equipment, training, facilities and construction, and other support. “The proposed sale will improve Kuwaits capability to meet current and future threats within the region,” DSCA said. “Kuwait intends to use these munitions with its current fleet of F/A-18 aircraft.”

The US Air Force will award contracts to provide the equipment if unavailable from stock or are considered.

On July 31, the State Department approved the sale to Kuwait of 300 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles and related equipment at an estimated cost of $30.4 million, and on June 28, the US Navy awarded Boeing a $1.5 billion contract to produce 28 F-18 Super Hornets for Kuwait
