KUWAIT CITY, Jan 23, (KUNA): British Ambassador to Kuwait Michael Davenport said on Wednesday that Britain became a second home for many Kuwaitis who are investing in real estate in the UK, studying in its universities and traveling to it more than before. This came in a speech at a ceremony celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Kuwaiti- British friendship.

The British ambassador thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al- Sabah and MoI and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Mohammed Al-Jabri on behalf of his government and wishes “our two countries a happy anniversary, and also a further 120 years of partnership and friendship, well into the next century.”

Britain is proud to be a member of the international coalition that British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher played a major role in liberating Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion and the friends of the coalition who helped Kuwaitis in restoring its independence and sovereignty, Davenport added.

He pointed out that the outcome of the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the UK in 2012 established the Joint Steering Group (JSG), which “has helped us to deepen our defense and security co-operation.” Britain is always ready to face Kuwait’s challenges “side by side. Not only do we have a strong bond of friendship. This is matched by a close and rare identity of interests and values,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Mohammad Nasser Al-Jabri on Wednesday described Kuwaiti-British ties as extraordinary and distinctive noting that they have grown to turn into an example to be followed at the level of international ties.

Minister Al-Jabri, speaking during a ceremony marking the 120th anniversary of the Kuwaiti- British friendly relationship, said the friendship treaty, inked by the two countries on Jan 23, 1899, signaled start of the mutual cooperation which expanded with time,covering political, economic, military and information sectors. Britain is currently a credible ally of the State of Kuwait, minister Al-Jabri has affirmed.

Moreover, he asserted that the Kuwaiti leadership, namely His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is keen on boosting the cooperation between the two friendly countries in a manner that would contribute to attaining their higher interests and bolstering the historic bonds.
