UGC lift GOA Rolling Trophy – Veterans United win exhibition match

KUWAIT CITY, April 26: United Goans Centre (UGC) one of Kuwait’s oldest existing football club along with Goa Maroons, inscribed their name on the prestigious GOA Rolling Trophy organized by Goan Overseas Association (Kuwait), easily beating FC Sparx 3-0 in a one sided final of the 11 a side tournament played at Al-Bayan Grounds on Friday 20th April 2017 under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation.

The tournament sponsored by Bassem International General Trading Company (Charles Dsa) featured 12 KIFF Affiliates and was the last regular tournament of the season. FC Sparx clearly missing their star game maker Ahmed due to a second yellow card in the previous match were unable to contain the continuous onslaught from UGC’s Hari, Kishor and Vaseem with their captain and man of the match Denil initiating most of the moves. Hari, Kishore and substitute Irshad scored for UGC while Rashid of FC Sparx and Jitesh of UGC were given marching orders by the referee for physical assault towards the end of the match.

Earlier in an unique exhibition match to honor the veteran soccer players of Kuwait, Veterans United and GOA Veterans played out an exciting goalless draw and Veterans United led by the popular Collin Figueira finally prevailed in the tie breaker 3-1 with their goalkeeper saving 3 penalties. In the post-match presentation ceremony, chief guest Fidelis Fernandes former KIFF president and a well-known personality in Kuwait, congratulated Veterans United and the two finalists for putting up a good performance.

He also appreciated Goan Overseas Association for promoting football in Kuwait and successfully conducting the 24th edition of their tournament. The President of Goan Overseas Association Julio Cardoso in his thank you note, thanked the sponsor, chief guest, KIFF, the participating teams, and his managing committee for a successful tournament. Man of the match Denil received his award from special invitee Clinton D’Sa, while the referees received mementos from the hands of Muriel Alphonso.

Xavier Furtado the president of AVC Sports & Cultural Association gave away the individual runners up trophies to GOA Veterans, and Ian D’Souza the Vice President of Goan Overseas Association handed over the winners individual trophies to Veterans United. Steven Rodrigues the treasurer of G.O.A gave away the runners up veterans’ trophy to GOA Veterans.

The individual trophies for runners up FC Sparx were given by Erin Pereira, Cultural Secretary of G.O.A; Zinia Cardoso handed out the winners’ individual trophies to UGC. Aareta Fernandes gave away the Runners Up trophy to captain Husain of FC Sparx while the chief guest Fidelis Fernandes handed over the glittering GOA Rolling trophy to the captain and UGC team. The entire event was hosted extremely well by Kevin Vaz.
