KUWAIT CITY, Aug 11: Two naturalized Kuwaitis of Saudi origin were arrested for buying their Kuwaiti citizenship from a Kuwaiti for KD 45,000, reports Al-Rai daily.

The suspects have been receiving all privileges granted to Kuwaiti citizens for years until Assistant Undersecretary for Citizenship and Passport Affairs in the Interior Ministry Major General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah issued a decision to open the archived citizenship files.

The duo operates a car rental company and they hire workers from outside, besides adding ‘ghost’ national labor force to benefit from their salaries through the manpower support given by the government.

Detectives, led by director of the Citizenship and Passports Affairs Department in the ministry, arrested the suspects after getting a warrant from the Public Prosecution.

During interrogation, one of the suspects, who was arrested in Wafra, disclosed he is of Saudi descent and he purchased his Kuwaiti citizenship for KD 20,000 from a Kuwaiti in 1985, such that he was added to the Kuwaiti’s file as his brother.

The Kuwaiti also facilitated the naturalization of the second suspect — friend of the other suspect — for KD 25,000. The duo is now in police custody and necessary procedures are underway.
