Rarely-awarded prestigious decoration only bestowed by President

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 19, (KUNA): His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al- Jaber Al-Sabah has been handed a rare prestigious decoration by US President Donald Trump for his leading regional and global diplomatic efforts, an Amiri Diwan official said on Friday.

The Legion of Merit (LOM), Degree Chief Commander was accepted, on behalf of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, at a private ceremony in the Oval Office by Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, according to Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al-Sabah. It comes in recognition of His Highness the Amir’s tireless efforts and significant leadership role in the region and the world, and as a culmination of the historic and distinguished partnership between Kuwait and the US spanning decades.

The award also coincides with the upcoming 60th anniversary of the establishment of relations between both nations. According to the White House, “the Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, is a rarely-awarded, prestigious decoration that can only be bestowed by the president, typically to chiefs of state or heads of government of other countries. The honor was last awarded in 1991.”

Sheikh Nasser Sabah said upon direction from His Highness the Deputy Amir and Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, he received the Legion of Merit, from President Donald Trump, on behalf of His Highness the Amir. He made the remark to KUNA following a ceremony held at the White House to honor His Highness the Amir. He said that during the event he had voiced much thanks and appreciation to the US president for this good gesture which showed that His Highness the Amir and the State of Kuwait are held in high esteem by the US Administration.

It also reflected a recognition of the great role and unremitting effort of His Highness the Amir for building and promoting strategic cooperation relations with the US, based on the bonds of partnership and friendship between both countries and peoples over several decades. “A leader in the Middle East for decades, (HH) the Amir has been a truly unwavering friend and partner to the United States,” the White House said in a statement. It added that His Highness the Amir “provided indispensable support to the United States throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Defeat-(IS) campaign.” “The Amir is also an unparalleled diplomat, having served as his nation’s Foreign Minister for 40 years,” it noted. “His tireless mediation of disputes in the Middle East has bridged divides under the most challenging circumstances.” It affirmed that Trump “is very pleased to award this honor to his dear friend, the Amir.”

His Highness Deputy Amir sent a cable to His Highness the Amir to congratulate him after Trump awarding him the prestigious US Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander.

In his cable, His Highness the Deputy Amir expressed his, the Kuwaiti government and people’s sincere congratulations to His Highness the Amir on this well-deserved honoring. He noted that this decoration comes in recognition of His Highness the Amir’s leading role to bolster regional and international peace and security. “This notable honoring to Your Highness shows how the international community places Your Highness and Kuwait high, thanks to Your wise policy and Your sincere efforts to promote dialogue for resolving disputes and conflicts as well as to Your internationally-respected diplomacy and humanitarian role,” His Highness the Deputy Amir stated.

He underlined His Highness the Amir’s humanitarian march, which is full of generous initiatives to aid people affected by natural or man-made disasters in every part of the globe, will remain a source of inspiration to the whole world. He also wished Highness the Amir speedy recovery and longlasting wellbeing. His Highness Deputy Amir also sent a cable to the US President expressing his appreciation and thanks on behalf of the Kuwaiti people and government for awarding His Highness the Amir the Legion of Merit. In his cable, Sheikh Nawaf said that he “highly appreciates such tremendous honor in recognition of His Highness the Amir’s contributions and efforts to promote regional and international peace, including supporting development as well as His Highness’ well-known humanitarian initiatives around the world”.

His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf also affirmed that this honor has become a source of pride and praise for the entire Kuwaiti people, as it is a living symbol and an embodiment of the deep historical and solid ties between the two nations. His Highness the Deputy Amir received a congratulatory cable from Chief of the Kuwait National Guard (KNG) His Highness Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah on the occasion of the US President deocration of His Highness the Amir with the Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander.

In the cable, Sheikh Salem Al-Ali expressed the KNG’s commanders and forces greetings to His Highness the Amir on the occasion of the US President granting him the LOM.

In return, His Highness the Deputy Amir sent a cable of thanks to His Highness Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah for his and KNG’s staff sincere congratulations and sentiments. His Highness the Deputy Amir and Crown Prince received on Friday a congratulatory cable from His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on US President Donald Trump’s honoring of His Highness the Amir with the Legion of Merit. In the cable, Sheikh Sabah Khaled expressed his pleasure to convey sincere greetings and congratulations to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on the US President Donald Trump’s decoration.

The award given to His Highness the Amir by the US President is the most “prestigious” decoration bestowed by an American leader, Washington’s ambassador to Kuwait Alina Romanowski said on Saturday. The US appreciates His Highness the Amir’s “profound contributions” towards global diplomacy, the envoy told reporters on the sidelines of a local environmental cleanup drive, a day after Trump dedicated the US Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, to His Highness the Amir. Citing “all-encompassing” bilateral relations, she said the award given to His Highness the Amir was an acknowledgement of his “significant presence” in the region, in addition to an emblem of Washington’s “enduring” ties with Kuwait.
