KUWAIT CITY, Feb 29, (Agencies): Kuwait’s interior minister said on Monday that a man who rammed his car into a group of police officers last week, killing one of them, “belonged to an organisation” — a wording that suggested the incident was an Islamist militant attack. Kuwait has been on alert against Islamist militants since a suicide bomber killed 26 people in June last year at a Shiite Muslim mosque in an attack claimed by Islamic State. Sheikh Mohammad Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, speaking at a ceremony to honour the deceased police officer, said the man who carried out the attack “belonged to an organisation,” state news agency KUNA said, quoting a statement by the interior ministry It did not elaborate on the type of organisation and the interior ministry spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. According to some sources, the suspect Abdulaziz Al-Shamlan who ran, told the Public Prosecutor he is a member of the Taleban movement, reports Al-Rai daily. During interrogations he also said to have told the Prosecutor he carried out the crime at the behest of his two brothers.

Other sources close to the investigations, said Al-Shamlan insisted it was a premeditated murder. Each time he answered a question from the Prosecutor, he recited a verse from the Holy Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

During interrogations, Al-Shamlan added, ‘It’s over; I did my duty and killed. These policemen are guards employed by the State and it is a duty to kill them’. Sources indicated the Public Prosecutor based on the confessions of the accused ordered the arrest and detention of his brothers for allegedly inciting the man to commit murder. Without disclosing further details, the daily said the brothers have been interrogated.
