Daily wages expats bemoan situation

KUWAIT CITY, March 22: A number of building owners, individuals and companies reacted to an article published by Al-Rai daily on March 17 entitled, “Expats hoping to transmit infection (corona) to their apartments,” stating that some landlords offered rent exemptions for a specific period; while others reduced rents by a certain percentage, reports Al-Rai daily.

The initiatives of individuals and companies differed as some of them exempted tenants from paying rent for March and April; whereas others either granted three months exemption until the end of May or reduced rent by a certain percentage from February to May.

Tenants — citizens and expatriates — appealed to real estate owners to exempt them from paying rent because of the difficult conditions the country is witnessing these days due to the spread of corona. They pointed out the spread of the virus and the prudent governmental steps necessitated the closure of their workplaces.

Companies incurred huge losses which negatively affected the income of their employees, up to the point that they might default in the payment of rent and then enter into legal battles with the landlords. Some expatriates who work on a daily basis are suffering as their work is almost completely halted; so many of them will find it difficult to pay the rent, especially those sharing accommodations.
