KUWAIT CITY, July 14: Some advertisements published on social media platforms and websites are encouraging youths to buy Shab, Captagon pills and other psychotropic substances, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources from the security sector. Sources affirmed that a number of those involved in this criminal activity have been arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution.

Sources said drug dealers are targeting Kuwait due to the high prices of these substances here compared to neighboring countries (10 times higher than the prices in other countries), indicating the estimated drug trafficking revenues for 18 months — from the beginning of 2021 until June 2022 — reached KD200 million.

Sources added the concerned authorities have intensified their efforts to implement an effective drug control mechanism; including the provision of the latest technologies for detecting contraband at air, land and sea ports. In addition, lawyers revealed the number of crimes committed by youths increased by 300 percent over the past year due to the consumption of drugs and psychotropic substances.

They said 97 murder and attempted murder cases were recorded; in addition to 1,550 kidnapping and assault cases among those aged 17 to 30 years old and most of whom were found to be under the influence of drugs when they committed the crimes. Meanwhile, educators and psychologists cited the lack of entertainment centers and restriction of activities as some of the reasons behind the rising drug addiction rate in the country.
