Report set on fate of academic year

KUWAIT CITY, July 15, (Agencies): Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education Dr Saud Al-Harbi will submit to the Council of Ministers Thursday his report on the ‘fate’ of the academic year based on opinions presented by the ministry’s sectors in public and private education, reports Al-Seyassah daily It is about five months the studies at various educational levels were suspended based on the decision of the health authorities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Al-Harbi is likely to announce the details of his plan at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, including a decision to end the scholastic year for all levels except the twelfth, and students move from kindergarten to the eleventh grade to the next grade.

In this context, educational sources said the minister has based his decision on the scholastic year in accordance with the data of the health authorities and the opinion presented by the public education sector last week. It was decided to post the cumulative average for the tenth and eleventh grades.

The sources pointed out that the resumption of the study for the twelfth grade will take place via the distance education system for five weeks, at the rate of 24 actual school days, followed by a written test in accordance with the traditional system of students, taking into account health and preventive requirements in coordination with the health authorities to ensure the safety of all students.

The second supplementary academic year for the current academic year will start on Sept 15, with the results to be announced and certificates to be awarded on Sept 30.

The sources pointed out the minister will disclose to the Council of Ministers the extent of the schools’ readiness to receive students in the event the health authorities allow the resumption of study in its traditional form for the new academic year, which is set for Oct 4, 2020.
