Probe into sudden death of ex-MP

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 11: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former MP Falah Al-Sawagh Al-Azmi, said a statement by the ministry on Tuesday.

The statement urged people not to speculate on the cause of the former MP’s death until the investigation is completed, as it also conveyed deepest condolences to his family. Al-Azmi, 55, passed away on Tuesday after a series of health scares. Known for his patriotic zeal, he fi rst joined parliament in 2009 and had previously worked for Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), amongst other institutions.

The National Assembly on Tuesday mourned the death of Al-Sawagh who died at Babtain Cosmetology and Burns Hospital. Earlier, Al-Sawagh was admitted to the hospital where he underwent fat reduction operation. He felt chest pains after surgery so he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was pronounced dead. Al-Sawagh was born on May 23, 1961. He obtained a diploma from the Teachers Institute (Islamic Education).

He served as Vice Board Chairman of Fintas Cooperative Society, Chairman of Zakat and Charity Committee at Jaber Al-Ali and Fintas Charity, and board member of the Journey of Hope Charity for cancer patients.

He also worked at Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation (KNPC). He was a member of the 2009 Parliament and the first legislature annulled in 2012. Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem said on his Twitter account, “I received, with deep sorrow and sadness, news on the passing of former MP and well-mannered friend Falah Al-Sawagh.” Deputy Speaker Mubarak Al-Khreinij extended his deepest condolences to the family of the former MP, recalling the good relationship and friendship that brought them together during their parliamentary membership. He described the former MP as a kind person who loved his country and colleagues while trying his best to cooperate with everyone in the interest of Kuwait and its people.

In another development, MP Khalaf Dumaithir Al-Anazi told reporters Tuesday that there are strong indications that the Parliament will be dissolved very soon. “I expect issuance of a decision on the dissolution within the next few days,” he asserted. Meanwhile, MP Auda Al-Ruwaei announced his intention to grill the minister of education on his Twitter account. He revealed the grilling points will include scholarships, appointments, forged certifi cates and botched educational plan.
