Poll registration dates set

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 18: The Interior Ministry has announced that the registration period for those planning to contest the 2016 National Assembly elections will be from Oct 19-28, 2016.

In a press statement Tuesday, the Public Relations and Security Media Department in the Interior Ministry affirmed the period for filing candidacies is in line with Law No. 35/1962 on the election of Parliament members and Decree No. 279/2016 inviting voters to elect members of the National Assembly published in the Official Gazette (Kuwait Today).

The department enumerated conditions for contesting the elections as follows: must be a native Kuwaiti in accordance with the law, his name should be on the voters list, age should not be less than 30 years on the day of election, fluent in reading and writing Arabic, has no criminal record and was not convicted of committing offenses related to honor or integrity unless he has been rehabilitated.

Citizens convicted, through a final judgment, of offending God, the Prophets (Peace be Upon Them) and entity of HH the Amir will not be allowed to contest the elections. Candidates must register at the Election Affairs Department in Shuwaikh from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm on the abovementioned dates. They must fill out the registration forms, present their original citizenship certificates, submit two photographs and pay KD 50 insurance fee.

In a related development, several candidates from various constituencies have announced their intention to run in the elections scheduled for Nov 26, 2016. Former lawmaker Salah Khorshid, who intends to contest the elections from the First Constituency, unveiled his plan to hold several meetings with his constituents for consultation and coordination before finalizing his election plans.

A new candidate, Yusif Al-Fadallah, said he decided to contest the elections from the Third Constituency based on his belief that young people must respond to the national call to serve his country and its people. Another new candidate from the Third Constituency, Amani Al-Saleh, disclosed her electoral slogan is, “Your glory lasts, Oh My Nation”; while Sarah Ali Al-Qannai who will also contest the elections from the same constituency said her slogan is, “We work for your sake’. Former MP and former Minister of Education Dr Ahmed Al-Mulaifi confirmed his plan to contest the election from the First Constituency with the slogan, “Kuwait … to where.”
