Panel calls for ‘full report’ on housing care for women

MP request session on problem of domestic workers

KUWAIT CITY, April 28: The National Assembly during Tuesday’s session will discuss four letters — two of them submitted by the head of the National Assembly’s Women’s Affairs Committee. In one of the letters the head of the committee has called for a complete report on housing care for women and the other women’s protection from abuse and domestic violence. Another letter is from MP Mohammed Al-Dalal who has called for allocating a session to discuss the problem of domestic workers and how the government plans to deal with this issue.

Yet another letter is from MP Yousuf Al-Fadala addressed to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly on the issue of the Filipino Embassy team entering private homes to rescue Filipino domestic workers. MP Al-Dalal said the illegal practices of the Philippines Embassy in Kuwait should be referred to the Interior, Defense and Foreign Affairs committees of the National Assembly.

Al-Fadala has also said the Foreign Affairs Committee should be asked to investigate local press reports that the Philippines Embassy (rescue) team entered homes and assisted domestic workers to escape and take refuge in the embassy building.

The letter from the Chairperson of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs is a request for the Committee to be given additional time (until the end of the current session) to study the 19th report of the Committee on Housing Affairs referred to it by the decision of the Parliament on Feb 6, 2018.

In the letter the Chairperson has also requested that the draft law on protection of women from abuse and domestic violence which is currently on the agenda of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee be referred to the Committee pursuant to Article 99 of the parliamentary bylaw.

In another development, MP Mohammed Barak Al-Mutair has called on the Minister for Housing and Services Affairs to open an impartial investigation into the sinking of a boat loaded with pebbles at the Shuaiba Port. On his Twitter account, Al-Mutairi has asked the minister to find out why the boat was forced to leave the Shuwaikh Port and sent to the Shuaiba Port.
