KUWAIT CITY, Feb 5: The parliamentary Legislative and Legal Committee has approved the request of the Public Prosecution to lift the immunity of MPs Waleed Al-Tabtabaie, Jamaan Al-Harbash and Mohammad Al- Mutairi in relation to the legislative building storming case.

Speaking to reporters after the committee meeting on Sunday, Committee Chairman MP Mohamed Al-Dalal affirmed that majority of the panel members approved the request to lift the immunity of the three MPs accused of involvement in case number 946/2011 (storming of Parliament building). He added the committee postponed talks on the request to lift the immunity of MP Ahmad Nabil Al-Fadhel in case number (1849/2016) as it has yet to hear the opinion of the MP in this regard. He went on to say that the committee approved several bills on the rights of persons with disabilities, rights of patients, accreditation of academic certificates, housing care, and establishment of a high commission to follow up constitutional and legal aspects of the population issue.

He revealed the committee reviewed the proposed amendment of laws on the establishment of Capital Markets Authority and Municipal Council election. Furthermore, Interior and Defense Committee Chairman MP Askar Al-Enizi disclosed that they discussed the proposed amendment of laws on National Assembly election and citizenship in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah.

Al-Enizi said an agreement has been reached, in principle, on granting people the right to resort to the court in case their citizenship is withdrawn and informing those who hold dual nationality about the need to correct their status before taking any action. He confirmed the committee listened to the opinions of the Interior Ministry on 10 proposals regarding Election Law and six proposals pertaining to the Nationality Law. He added the committee will listen to the views of other authorities, such as the Supreme Judicial Council and Fatwa and Legislation Department, on Monday.

He hopes that the committee will approve the proposed amendment of the Nationality Law, while pointing out that it will take time to deliberate on the proposed amendments to the Election Law as this requires thorough study. In another development, Public Works Minister Abdul Rahman Al- Mutawa revealed the government will discuss on Monday the grilling of Information Minister and State Minister for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al- Humoud Al-Sabah. He said the government will decide in its meeting on Tuesday if it will attend the session on the no-confidence motion against Sheikh Salman or not.
