Brathwaite ready for B’desh challenge

ISLAMABAD, Nov 20, (AP): Pakistan’s compensation case against India for failing to fulfill contracted cricket tours between them was dismissed on Tuesday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board said its India counterpart, the BCCI, breached an agreement between them in 2014 to stage six bilateral series from 2015-2023.

The PCB wanted compensation of about $63 million for the two series it was due to host against India in November 2014 and December 2015, which never materialized.

The International Cricket Council said in a statement: “Having considered detailed oral and written submissions, the dispute panel has dismissed the PCB’s claim against the BCCI. The judgment is binding and non-appealable.”

The PCB wasn’t happy.

“The announcement … has come as a disappointment for the PCB,” it said in a media release.

“PCB will determine its future course of action in this regard after detailed deliberations and consultation with its stakeholders.”

The teams have not played a full-fledged bilateral series since political ties were strained after the Mumbai attacks in 2008.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite says he expects Bangladesh to put up a tough fight on home turf when they kick off a two-Test series in Chittagong on Thursday.

The visitors start the series as favourites having thumped Bangladesh in back-to-back Tests during their tour of the Caribbean in July.

But Brathwaite exercised caution ahead of this week’s series opener, saying Bangladesh could exploit their home advantage against the visiting side.

“There will be few challenges, we have to expect that,” he told reporters after a two-day warm-up match in Chittagong on Monday ended in a draw.

“It won’t be so easy. Obviously they are very good at home. But we are ready for the challenges.”

Bangladesh have upstaged Test giants England and Australia on home soil in the past two years, but then struggled against weaker sides Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in 2018.

Meanwhile, Fielding coach Nic Pothas has been named interim head coach of West Indies for the tour of Bangladesh following the departure of Stuart Law, the West Indies Cricket Board has said.

Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya will get his bowling action assessed in Australia this week and consequentially miss the third and final Test against England, the country’s cricket board said on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was reported by match officials for a suspect bowling action during Sri Lanka’s loss in the opening Test in Galle but was allowed to carry on playing till the results of his test was known.

His bowling action will be examined at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on Friday, the same day the hosts begin the dead rubber against England, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

“In place of Akila Dananjaya, the selectors have included spinner Nishan Peiris into the Sri Lanka Test Squad to face England in the third Test match,” the SLC said in a statement.

Peiris, 21, bowls off-spin and is yet to play for the island country in any of the three formats.

Dananjaya’s bowling action had to be tested within two weeks of the match referee’s report from Galle.
