Nod to breast-milk substitutes

KUWAIT CITY, March 20: The Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi issued a ministerial decision decreeing the issuance and approval of the Kuwaiti code to regulate the marketing of breast-milk substitutes and related products and foods for infants and young children, reports Aljarida daily.

According to the second article of the code, the National Committee for the Promotion of Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition, in coordination with the concerned authorities, is entrusted with following up the provisions of the Kuwaiti code stipulated in the first article of this decision, and preparing draft executive decisions required to implement the aforementioned code, and submitting them to the director general of the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition or the undersecretary of the Ministry of Health to approve and circulate them, as the case may be.

The ministerial decision highlighted the desire of the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition in the State of Kuwait to implement the decisions and recommendations of the World Health Assembly related to infants and young children in terms of the procedures to ensure that children are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, the procedures to ensure that supplementary foods given to children in the following period for the first six months are appropriate and safe while the breastfeeding continues, and the procedures to ensure the protection and promotion of breastfeeding and to ensure the correct use of breast milk substitutes if the need arises.
