KUWAIT CITY, Sept 16: Rapporteur of the Supreme Council for Environment Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ahmad revealed that the council has decided to disallow the establishment of factories in the southern region of the country, which covers the ports of Abdullah, Ahmadi and Shuaiba, pending the completion of study on the environmental burdens in the region, reports Al-Jarida daily.

In a statement, Sheikh Al-Ahmad added the decision was taken in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Council for Environment chaired by the First Deputy Premier and Defense Minister Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad.

He stressed on the council’s keenness to push forward development and boost the industrial sector to achieve sustainable development provided that the health of citizens is sustained and safety of the human communities in the country are not affected, indicating the inhabitants are considered a priority over all industrial or commercial projects. Investors in marine tourism have warned about the negative consequences of decision number 63/2018 issued by State Minister for Housing and Services Affairs Jinan Boushehri on obtaining marine driving license for riding personal watercraft, reports Al-Rai daily.

They said the decision is illogical and it will bring about major financial losses, as the business environment is not prepared for such a decision. They pointed out the Ministry of Communications is not capable of issuing a large number of licenses; indicating that the current practice is requiring an individual who wants to rent a personal watercraft to hand over his ID card and driving license.

They added a similar decision was issued in the past but it was not enforced because it is illogical and unrealistic. The decision prohibits riding personal watercraft and boats without obtaining a marine driving license which will be issued to Kuwaitis, other GCC citizens, expatriates and domestic workers
